How do I get tested?
The screening for CF is done from a painless cheek-brush swab (no needles!), in
fact, you collect your own sample and mail it directly to our laboratory which is
located at the Royal Children's Hospital. Visit your Obstetrician or general practitioner
to discuss and arrange screening for CF. If your doctor does not have any of our cystic
fibrosis carrier testing packs call us on 8341 6201 and we will send you a pack to take
to your doctor.
Our pack contains an information brochure, request form (which must
be signed by a medical practitioner), cheek-brush, instructions on sampling, pre-paid
reply envelope and payment form. Because CF screening is not covered by Medicare
we need to charge for the testing ($220 per person screened) BUT
you only need CF screening once in your lifetime, so you don't need to be retested
for each pregnancy.
If you or your partner have a family history of cystic fibrosis call Genetic Health Services Victoria on 8341 6201 to discuss testing.
